GRIN, it’s 2024: Mark your calendars

We’ve been quiet because we’ve been busy! This post gives an update on what GRIN has been up to, and some key dates for 2024.

GRIN Board Retreat, 2024

In early February, a board retreat allowed our directors to focus on formalizing GRIN’s structure, governance and strategic direction. All agreed it was a good investment of time and effort.

GRIN board members work hard and play hard: wrapping up a board retreat

We are grateful to the Zero Emissions Innovation Centre for funding the catering our board retreat. Melina Scholefield, Executive Director of ZEIC wrote, “Green infrastructure is an important tool in both climate mitigation and adaptation, and it is great to see the work of this group continue to develop and evolve“. Thank you, Mel and ZEIC, for your confidence in GRIN, green roofs and green infrastructure!

NEWS: Notice of Motion for Green Roofs, City of North Vancouver

Along with North Shore Streamkeepers, GRIN was pleased to support Councillor Tony Valente’s Notice of Motion for the City of North Vancouver. The Notice of Motion, 8. Zoning Bylaw and Development Guidelines Consideration for Green Roof Options, was presented on March 4th, to unanimous approval.

The concluding statement reads as follows:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT staff be directed to explore, as part of the Zoning Bylaw and Development Permit Guidelines review process, ways of reducing barriers to and increasing incentives that permit innovative uses of the rooftop, including, but not limited to, green roofs, green solar roofs, blue-green roofs, rooftop urban agriculture and rooftop patios.

Well done, Councillor Valente! Stay tuned for developments.

Vancouver’s GR community has been celebrating this international day since its launch in 2020. Indeed, the website picture features us on the Vancouver Convention Centre living roof (from a 2019 tour). Perhaps it’s still being used because of the levitation and visible energy in the photo? We always have fun! More on World Green Roof Day to come! RSVP to participate and join our mailing list soon.
