Greening BC Skylines Together...
June 6th is World Green Roof Day, which unites people around the world in celebrating the benefits of green roofs for people and nature in cities and towns.
World Green Roof Day (#WGRD2024) celebrates the benefits of green roofs for people and nature in cities and towns around the world. Vancouver’s green roof community was an early adopter when WGRD launched in 2020 because GRIN’s predecessor, the Green Roof Info Think-Tank, had been organizing green roof tours since 2016, often followed by happy hour and/ or dinner.
There are two ways to get involved in World Green Roof Day:
- If you’re in the area, join us on a green roof tour;
- Help create a wave by engaging with social media on June 6th:
- Create a post using the hashtag #WGRD2024
- Amplify other posts using the hashtag #WGRD2024

This year, we’ll visit the 2 acre extensive green roof of the North Vancouver Loblaws. Once a simple Sedum green roof, the committed maintenance crew from Architek have diversified it to include wildflowers, native bee habitat and even some surprise orchids.
In March, the City of North Vancouver (CNV) unanimously passed a motion to remove barriers to rooftop use, including green roofs. GRIN was pleased to support Councillor Tony Valente in preparing the notice of motion, together with the North Shore Streamkeepers. Let’s celebrate these efforts and commitments!
When: Thurs.. June 6 (4:30 – 6:30)
- 4:30 – 5:00 > Loblaws City Market (1650 Lonsdale Ave, North Vancouver, BC). Meet on Lonsdale, south of main entrance, beside yellow mural/ bike racks.
- 5:30 – 6:30 > North Point Brewing (266 1st St E, North Vancouver, BC V7L 1B3, Canada). We’ll be in the loft, and there will be food trucks outside.
How: RSVP here or Contact Us
Make waves: Share a picture or video of your favourite green roof on social media using the hashtag #WGRD2024 to create a wave of awareness across the internet. As the earth moves under the sun’s path, these hashtags trend and generate swell.
